ICRT-Belize was legally registered as a Non-Governmental Organization in April 2008 as the Belize based arm of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism of the United Kingdom.  ICRT-Belize was formed as an independent entity with expressed goals of ascertaining the needs of the country of Belize and the region as it relates to Responsible Tourism and to undertake specific tasks to promote responsible tourism, sustainable development and best management practices in the tourism and hospitality industry.

ICRT-Belize immediately sought to find linkages to promote the certification of local hotels in the country in “green aspects.” After a few short weeks of research, Green Globe was chosen as the premier organization for certifying the hotels in the country.

ICRT invited Mr. Guido Bauer of Green Globe to host a series of sensitization meetings in the country to interested properties and also to conduct the initial training of the needed Green Globe Auditors in the country. Support from the industry was phenomenal at the sensitization meetings and financial support from the Belize Tourism Board also made it possible.

The Green Globe program traces its roots back to the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, where 182 heads of state from around the world endorsed the Agenda 21 principles of sustainable development. The Earth Summit was unprecedented for a U.N. conference, as it was the first time world leaders acknowledged, as a group, that consumption of non-renewable resources was leading to environmental degradation.

Since its inception, the Green Globe brand has represented the best in environmental responsibility. The brand and its associated programs hold even greater promise as the world further embraces the need for sustainability and response to global climate change as essential core values.
